The Movie Soundtrack That Comes With a Refund

The Movie Soundtrack That Comes With a Refund

It was a proud moment for us when we opened up the first soundtrack CD of our latest movie The House of Tomorrow. Obviously we have a digital version on iTunes and on our own Enlightenment Productions site, but I still remember my first LP record (‘Grease’ since you ask) so a CD felt not too retro by comparison.

I popped the disk into my laptop to check it, just as Luca flopped onto the bed. The first couple of tracks zipped by and he didn’t bat an eye. Then some of the background tracks came on. Some sad, some even eerie, all rather hauntingly beautiful if I say so myself.

‘Sorry,’ Luca said. ‘Who would listen to this?’

Well, clearly he must have read Hanan’s book as that question cut straight to the heart of marketing. I thought about our unique selling points for a moment.

‘People who watched the movie and love our work generally,’ I responded, slightly defensively.

‘Oh, yeah, someone’s going to listen to this in their car instead of, like, Magic FM.’

I stared at him. When did our cherubic nine-year-old turn into a sarcastic music critic? I clicked to the next track which I thought was reflective and pensive.

‘It’s just depressing,’ was Luca’s verdict on this one. ‘I bet you not even 20 people will buy this in a year!’

Well, I thought, it is a soundtrack and for a documentary…I played my trump card and clicked forward to Leonie Casanova’s track, a new recording and mix of ‘Holy Daughter’ (which she recorded in a shorter form for the ‘I Can’t Think Straight’ soundtrack).

That stopped Luca mid stream.

He shrugged. ‘But that’s Leonie. Farm songs’  High praise indeed.

Another track started, this one with some choral wailing (it works in the movie, trust me).

‘And,’ the mini marketing guru continued, ‘I bet you, you’ll get 10 refunds. No. All 20 will want a refund. Nobody wants to listen to this!’

So there you have it. As you know, I blog for fun, not to sell stuff, but I feel that Luca has done such a good job of selling The House of Tomorrow soundtrack that I couldn’t resist this one. And in case you don’t believe me, here’s a video of Luca’s response when Hanan assured him that a lot more than 20 people would buy it….Enjoy.

As a “people who watched the movie and love our work generally” I’m happy to be almost 64 and have a different view point from 9-year old Luca.  But then again,  maybe having a Halloween birthday may explain why I also find the tracks hauntingly beautiful!!!!!   😉
